Best Wireless Earbuds for Working Out in 2018

The Wirecutter Says…

Wireless headphones have come such a long way within a short period of time. Having tested hundreds of headphones over the last three years, I can guarantee you that the following are our top three picks for the best wireless workout headphones. I have listed them in order of preference.

The JLab Epic 2 Bluetooth

We love them because they:

  • are comfortable,
  • are durable and easy to use,
  • are quick and intuitive to put on,
  • hook over the ear, adding extra stability when you’re doing high-impact activities.

The three button remote controls everything from volume to track skipping. With a 12 hour battery life, one full charge can get you a few weeks of workouts. Plus, they’re very water resistant so you could literally sweat buckets and they’d still work. Just make sure you let them dry fully afterwards. All this, and they sound really great with a little extra treble and bass boost that makes rock and hip hop sound exciting.

  • We’ve taken the award-winning Epic Bluetooth® Earbuds and made them more waterproof, more skip-proof with Beacon™ Signal Technology, and even longer lasting with up to 12 hours of playtime.
  • All while keeping that perfect fit, made just for you. With best-in-class 12-hour battery life, a fitness-proof design and immersive skip-free sound, your best is now.

The Jaybird X3

If our pick is sold out or you prefer a different fit, the Jaybird X3 is our runner’s up. They come with a ton of tip options as well as removable stability wings.

We love them because they:

  • work with a wide variety of ear sizes and shapes,
  • have an incredible lifetime sweat resistance warranty,
  • have EQ adjustment via mobile app,
  • have a less finicky charging door.
The downside of these amazing headphones is that they:

  • cost more,
  • take a little more time to set up,
  • have a shorter battery life,
  • can have shushing quality to “S” sounds at high frequencies,
  • have a port-less charging system hence you have to keep track of this tiny dongle which can be really easy to lose.

That said, these are minor issues and compared to everything else we tested, the X3 are still really great. If you’re someone who’s really hard on your headphones, the X3 might be worth considering.

  • LONG BATTERY LIFE – The X3 has an 8-hour battery life. 15 minutes of charging gives you a full hour of playtime.

Plantronics BackBeat Fit Bluetooth

These are ideal if your workout takes you near traffic, or you want to stay aware of your surroundings.

The features that make them stand out include:

  • presence of hooks over the ears that have a rubbery grip to them,
  • a big play/pause button is easy to find when you’re mid-workout,
  • super water resistance,
  • a long lasting battery that can play for eight hours before needing a charge.

While the sound quality isn’t as good as sealed headphones, the BackBeat Fit are the only unsealed Bluetooth headphones we’ve heard that are worth your money.

RIZKNOWS Says…

Today I will be talking about the best workout headphones or sport headphones on the market right now. These are headphones that will have you covered should you need high quality sound that won’t leave your ears a mess after two to three uses

The Bose Soundsport Free Headphones

This is the best high end workout headphones. I know that’s a controversial pick. They are $250, but all things considered, they are pretty beastly.

Advantages of the Bose Soundsport Free Headphones

  • They are truly wireless.
  • They are really comfortable.
  • They have no cable that gets in the way. It’s a really liberating experience to have no cable or cord between the headphones.
  • They come with different sized ear tips and fins, so you can get the best fit for you.
  • They have a pretty damn good sound quality for being fully wireless.
  • They have a very stable connection between the headphones.
  • They don’t cut out much.
  • They have a very stable overall Bluetooth connection to your Bluetooth source, like your phone.
  • Walls, doors, don’t get in the way, and you can go above 50 ft. and that connection is still good.
Disadvantages of the Bose Soundsport Free Headphones

  • They are really big. If you see them in your ear, they stick out so much that it’s weird.
  • They’re a little bit heavier, so they weigh on your ears.
  • They don’t completely seal off your ear canal hence you are bound to hear a lot of wild noise if you go cycling or running with them. To some people, this is totally fine because of being able to let in the ambient sound.
  • They are just really expensive.

All the same, these are the best high end workout headphones that you can get right now.

Advantages of the Beats Powerbeats3 Headphones

  • They are really comfortable.
  • They go all the way around your ear, providing a very secure fit hence you won’t look like they are going to pop off your head when doing cross fit or running.

  • They are water resistant, which is great.
  • They have fantastic battery life, right around 12 hours on a single charge.
  • They have a fast field charging feature, so you can charge them for five minutes and that gets you around two hours of playback.

  • They never really seal off the ear canal
[cta_image_box2 imagesrc=”https://www.traininginthebay.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Beats-Powerbeats3.jpg ” alt=”Beats Powerbeats3″ link=”http://amzn.to/2CSHzoO” btntext=”Check Reviews & Price” color=”success” btnsize=”lg” headline=”Beats Powerbeats3 (Mid-Range)” titlecolor=”orange”]

[/cta_image_box2]

The Bose Sounds Ports Headphones

I have mostly talked about wireless headphones, truly wireless ones and on-ear headphones. However, the Bose Sounds ports headphones are the best wired workout headphones. There are still people that use those. They cost right around $99 but you can usually find them for less.

Advantages of The Bose Sounds ports headphones

  • They are insanely comfortable.
  • They have a really good audio quality.
  • They have got your remote and mic locked down.
  • The cable does not stick to your body or anything like that.

Just overall, if you’re looking for wired headphones and you can afford right around 90 bucks; these are the best ones out there.

The Best Overall Workout Headphones

These are my favorite headphones and I have been using them for the last year every single day. They are the Jaybird X3s. I love these headphones. I’ve tested so many headphones and these are still the ones that I use a year later.

Advantages of the Jaybird X3s

  • They are really comfortable.
  • They have a much sleeker design.
  • They do come with form and silicon ear tips.
  • They completely seal off your ear canal.
  • You can wear them in the under-ear position, which is a lot more traditional.
  • You can wrap them around your ear. That’s what I find is better for working out and for running.
  • They have a great sound quality.
  • One can actually customize the EQ such that if you want more bass, you can do that. If you want more treble, you can do that.
  • They also are pretty water resistant.
Disadvantages of the Jaybird X3s

  • They use a proprietary charging clip
  • The remote is a little bit larger so if you’re running, you will have to string them up against your neck and around your ear.
  • They are quite pricey, right around 130 bucks.
  • They work with the Jaybird app hence you must have installed.
[cta_image_box2 imagesrc=”https://www.traininginthebay.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/jaybird-x3-1.jpg” alt=”Jaybird X3″ link=”http://amzn.to/2zc0ubW” btntext=”Check Reviews & Price” color=”success” btnsize=”lg” headline=” Jaybird X3 Sport Bluetooth Headset (Best Overall)” titlecolor=”orange”]

  • UNIVERSAL SECURE FIT –The patented silicone ear fins securely attach to the top and back/lower surface areas of the ear for a snug fit, locking the earbuds in during workouts and intense physical activities

The Verge Says…

Expand Review
I’ll be honest, I find Bluetooth headphones a little annoying sometimes for the obvious reasons. You have to charge them, and take the time to pair them, and all of that, but the one thing that Bluetooth headphones are really great for is working out. They give you the freedom to move around the gym however you want to, and you can just stuff your phone in a pocket and forget about it while you’re out running.

For this, this is my next. We’re taking at look at Bluetooth sport headphones. Now there are a lot of good Bluetooth sport headphones out there now. So how do you even begin to choose which pair is right for you? I’ll say this, it’s not necessarily about the purest or absolute best audio quality you can get when it comes to sport headphones. These are going to get beat up. They’re going to be tossed in a gym bag, you’re going to sweat on them. So really what it comes down to is durability, of course how well they fit, can they hold a charge, and okay sound.

After using more then a dozen different pairs of sport headphones I’ve come up with two pairs that I think standout. My number one pick for Bluetooth sport headphones are JLab’s Epic Two wireless sport earbuds. JLab has made all of the right moves with this pair of headphones. From fit, to sound, to battery life, to waterproofing. These are sturdy, but light with an adjustable cable, and they come with eight different pairs of gel tips. So they should fit a variety of ears.

They do require a little bit of adjustment, because they go over the ear, and then you have to twist them in, but once they’re in there, they’re in there and they sound great. They offer deep base with crisp clear vocals. My only complaint would be that sometimes they sounded a little bit bright, so I’d end up turning the volume down.

Like a lot of other Bluetooth headphones they pair with both iPhone and Android smartphones, and they have a standard three button remote and mic attached to the cable. They have a ridiculously long 12 hour battery life, and they also come with an IPX5 waterproof rating. Now does this mean that you should go swimming with them? No, but I’ve been sweating in them, and have spilled water on them from my water bottle and the tap, and they’re still fine.

These aren’t perfect though. The plastic earbuds themselves are actually pretty big, and while I was able to find a comfortable fit eventually, the sheer size of those might be an annoyance to some people.

Now if you want to spend a little less money, a close second are Plantronics BackBeat Fit Bluetooth headphones. What really sold me on these was comfort and convenience. They just felt super comfortable to me. They go over the ear like the JLab’s for a more secure fit, and this cable is pretty thick, but the best part about it is when you throw it in a bag it doesn’t tangle.

The sound quality on these is pretty good. It’s not super base heavy, but there’s enough for beat driven workout songs. Also the earbuds are designed to let some noise into the ear canal, which some people prefer when they’re exercising outdoors. As an added bonus the BackBeat Fit’s come with a Neoprene armband for your smartphone.

So why aren’t these my top pick? Well the main reason is that the remote control technology is built into the earbuds themselves. It’s not in a little remote that comes on the cable. In theory, having interactive earbuds is not a bad idea, but in this case with the Plantronics there’s a learning curve, and they’re also kind of sensitive. So every time I went to go adjust the earbuds in my ears I would end up accidentally skipping or pausing a song. I just kept wishing that it had a simple three button remote on the cable like the JLab’s.

There are a lot of other Bluetooth sport headphones to choose from, and like I said this is going to come down to personal sound and fit preferences for you. But, there are some other things to consider that might be deal breakers. First, do you really want to spend $150-200 on a pair of headphones that are basically going to get beat up? That’s kind of how I feel about the Beats Powerbeats2 wireless headphones, or the brand new Jaybird Freedom Sport headphones. They’re both really nice, and offer good sound, but that’s a lot of money to spend on sport headphones.

You’ll also want to determine whether you can deal with neck buds while you’re working out. Like the kind on JBL’s Reflect Response Bluetooth sport headphones. Some people find these really comfortable, I find them to be a little bit annoying. Especially when I’m running. There are also some sport headphones that require you to use a mobile app to experience the full benefits of the headphones, like Jabra Sport Pace or Sport Coach, but personally last thing I want is to have to download another fitness app.

Whether or not you want six hours of battery life or 12, a flexible cable or an unbending one, interactive earbuds or a three button remote, noise isolating buds or ambient noise, and of course how well they actually fit you, is really going to come down to you, but you can’t go wrong with JLab’s Epic Two wireless sport earbuds.

  1. Check out Rowkin (Pulse and Surge) earbuds too. One of the best earbuds for running and working out in my opinion.
